Amanda Anisimova has just set up a Coco Gauff semifinal showdown in Beijing and also booked her maiden WTA Finals ticket.
The American, seeded at No. 3 at the China Open, recovered from a set down to edge out sixth-seeded Jasmine Paolini 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-4.
Early in the match, Anisimova led 5-3 and appeared to be cruising toward taking the first set. But then, the Wimbledon and US Open runner-up failed to close out the set, and paid the ultimate price for it as Paolini stole the opener.
However, the American tennis star didn’t panic a bit, impressively taking the opening four games of the second set before serving out for a decider in the ninth game.
Late in the third set, Anisimova was 3-4 down and facing some major pressure on her serve in the eighth game – but she managed to save a total of six break points and tie the decider to four games apiece, before claiming the key break in the ninth game and closing out the match on her serve in the following game.
Anisimova set to face Gauff and also participate at the WTA Finals
Earlier today, No. 2 seed Gauff beat Eva Lys in two sets to progress into the Beijing semifinal. Now that Anisimova has also gotten the job done in her match, everything is set for an all-American semifinal. Their semifinal match at the China Open will mark a milestone for American women’s tennis.
2004 – This will be the first semi-final between two Americans at a Tier 1/WTA-1000 event outside North America since Jennifer Capriati defeated Serena Williams in Rome in 2004. Wait.#ChinaOpen | @ChinaOpen @WTA @WTA_insider

By beating Paolini, 24-year-old Anisimova also secured her maiden spot at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. The American is the fourth player to reach Riyadh as Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek have also booked their places at the season-ending tournament.
