Nick Kyrgios thinks Alexander Bublik made “an interesting comment” but also honest when the Kazakh said that he wouldn’t choose the Australian to represent men’s tennis in a match against a female player.

Just before the US Open, it was rumored that a match between the 2022 Wimbledon finalist and WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was in the making.

During that time, Kyrgios appeared on a podcast with Bublik. Not only that the Australian didn’t deny the rumors, but he very openly indicated that the rumors were true. The seven-time ATP champion confidently stated that he would probably easily beat Sabalenka, while the Kazakh – knowing the Australian’s personality – remarked that he probably wasn’t the pick for such a match.

In the end, the match happened this past Sunday and Kyrgios beat Sabalenka 6-3 6-3. Afterward, the former ATP world No. 13 – who has a great relationship with Bublik – was asked about the 28-year-old’s comment from August.

Kyrgios on Bublik’s comment: Someone had to say it

“It’s an interesting comment from someone who has moulded their entire game about me. I mean, we are all thinking it. Someone had to say it. Bublik is a great friend of mine. And let me start by saying to see him and how well he has done the last year has been incredible to see,” the 30-year-old Australian said.

“I have always known that he had the ability to do these amazing things and achieve these amazing things. But look, Bublik, and let me tell you there have been some players messaging me day in and day out saying that you are representing us. It was serious pressure.”

Kyrgios also claimed that Bublik wasn’t the only ATP player who put pressure on him going into the Sabalenka match. Also, he told the Kazakh that he was “next” to play against a WTA player.
