Coco Gauff says she finds the WTA currently more interesting than the ATP because different players are winning on the biggest stage but also highlights that she “does not want to downplay” any of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s achievements.

Since 2024, only two players have been lifting Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis – Alcaraz and Sinner have split the eight Majors that have taken part since. For quite some time now, the Spaniard and the Italian have been separated from the rest of the competition. And as their dominance prolongs, the calls for someone to step in and challenge the two top-ranked players in the game increase.

In the women’s game, it is a completely different situation as this year four different players won Grand Slams – Madison Keys (Australian Open), Gauff (French Open), Iga Swiatek (Wimbledon) and Aryna Sabalenka (US Open).

Gauff: The sport is more exciting when there are multiple chances for something to happen

“Honestly, it’s great to have four different Grand Slam champs this year. All the girls have had a competitive year across the board and I think it makes the sport more exciting when there are multiple chances for something to happen. Although Carlos and Jannik are doing great, there’s talk of there needing to be a third person to make it more interesting. I think it’s better to have different champions to the same two,” Gauff said at the WTA Finals in Riyadh.

After making her point clear, Gauff underlined that her intention wasn’t to downplay Alcaraz and Sinner’s impressive accomplishments. Here is the American’s full answer.

Meanwhile, Gauff is set to open her WTA Finals title defense by taking on Jessica Pegula in Riyadh.
