Sinner ends Djokovic’s history bid; Zverev sees off the wildcard

Day 12 at the Championships, Friday 10 July. Jannik Sinner delivers a clinical straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic to reach his second consecutive Wimbledon final, ending, for now, the pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title. Alexander Zverev overpowers home wildcard Arthur Fery to set up a title match against Sinner on Sunday.

Novak Djokovic’s nearly three-year quest for a 25th major will have to wait for the US Open. On Friday, our Banker simply played too well for it to go any other way.

Sinner’s statement

Jannik Sinner beat Djokovic 6–4, 6–4, 6–4, hitting 16 aces and winning 88 percent of his first-serve points while committing just 15 unforced errors, precisely the department that had looked shakiest earlier in the fortnight. Djokovic, the greatest returner the game has produced, forced only a single break point across three sets and could not convert it. It is Sinner’s seventh career major final, and on this evidence our Banker call from Day 1 could not have aged better.

Zverev completes the set

Alexander Zverev’s rise up this diary’s form calls continued with a 7–6(0), 6–2, 6–4 win over Arthur Fery, the home wildcard whose own fairytale ends one match short of the final. Zverev shrugged off a shaky start, 18 unforced errors in the opening set, to win the tie-break 7–0 and never looked back, attacking Fery’s second serve relentlessly and dropping just two service points in the third set. It is Zverev’s second consecutive major final, and a shot at the Channel Slam having already won the French Open this year.
