An all-Czech final: Muchova and Noskova through

Day 11 at the Championships, Thursday 9 July. Karolina Muchova denies Coco Gauff in a three-hour, ten-point-tie-break epic, and Linda Noskova sees off Marta Kostyuk in straight sets. It is the first all-Czech Grand Slam singles final in the Open Era.

Thursday gave us the match of the women’s fortnight and, with it, a final nobody had pencilled in when the draw was made two weeks ago.

Muchova survives a classic

Coco Gauff came within two points of the biggest win of her career. Karolina Muchova won 6–2, 1–6, 7–6(10), through a decider that swung on a ten-point tie-break Muchova eventually took 12–10, after Gauff had recorded five break points in the opening set alone and looked, for a set, unstoppable. It is Muchova’s second Grand Slam final and comfortably her best result since her run to the 2023 French Open final — a quietly excellent tournament suddenly one match from a title.

Noskova completes the picture

Linda Noskova beat Marta Kostyuk 6–4, 6–4 to reach her first career Grand Slam final, unbeaten in sets since the third round and playing with a freedom that has been building since her win over Madison Keys on Monday. It sets up an all-Czech final against Muchova on Saturday — the first of the Open Era — and a genuinely open contest between two players who know each other’s games intimately.

The gentlemen’s semi-finals: Alexander Zverev against wildcard Arthur Fery, and Novak Djokovic against Jannik Sinner — history against the defending champion, in what should be the match of the fortnight. Saturday’s Ladies’ Final is now set: Noskova against Muchova, all-Czech, for a maiden Grand Slam title either way.
