Fritz into the quarters; Eala’s fairytale ends

Day 8 at the Championships, Monday 6 July. Taylor Fritz reaches a third straight Wimbledon quarter-final with a dominant win over Alexander Bublik. Our Dark Horse Alex Eala’s remarkable run finally ends against Jasmine Paolini, and wildcard Arthur Fery continues his own extraordinary story at Grigor Dimitrov’s expense.

Day 8 of 14 · Mon 6 July · Fourth round concludes · Despatch filed after play

Monday completed the picture for both quarter-final draws, and did so with one of the best performances of the fortnight and one of the toughest goodbyes.

Fritz’s masterclass

Taylor Fritz put on the performance of his tournament to beat Alexander Bublik 7–6(1), 6–4, 6–4, hitting 22 aces, winning 90 percent of first-serve points, and committing just 8 unforced errors — a display of discipline to go with the power that becomes the second American man this century to reach the Wimbledon quarter-final in three straight years. Our Value pick, having survived a scare against Sonego on Saturday, looks in the form of his life.

Eala’s run ends, on her own terms

Alex Eala’s fortnight — a run that included the biggest scalp of the tournament in defending champion Iga Świątek — came to a close with a 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 loss to No.13 seed Jasmine Paolini, who won 94 percent of her first-serve points in the decider and made only seven unforced errors when it mattered most. It is no disgrace: our Dark Horse leaves having delivered, by some distance, the single best result of the fortnight from this column’s picks.

The wildcard’s fairytale continues

Arthur Fery, the home wildcard, produced another five-set escape to beat Grigor Dimitrov 7–5, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 7–6(7), a result that will send a ripple of excitement through the home crowd for the rest of the fortnight. Alexander Zverev’s own fourth-round match against Jiri Lehecka was halted by curfew with the German two sets to the good, 6–4, 7–5, 3–3, and will resume Tuesday.

Elsewhere

Linda Noskova ended Madison Keys’s tournament 6–4, 7–6(2), while Flavio Cobolli saw off Alex de Minaur in three and Marta Kostyuk continued her fine season with a straightforward win over Ashlyn Krueger. Elise Mertens, fresh from removing Elena Rybakina on Saturday, beat Marie Bouzkova to reach the quarter-finals herself.

Seeds down

26Madison Keys — d. Noskova, straight sets
5Alex de Minaur — d. Cobolli, straight sets
10Alexander Bublik — d. Fritz, straight sets
29Alex Eala — d. Paolini, three sets

Vera’s form calls — marked to market

  • Men · Value — Held, emphatically. Taylor Fritz‘s best tennis of the tournament arrives at exactly the right time.
  • Women · Dark horse, closed — Out. Alex Eala‘s fortnight ends, but her name is made. The stand-out story of the Championships.

Next up · Day 9, Tuesday 7 July

The quarter-finals begin: Jannik Sinner against Jan-Lennard Struff, and Novak Djokovic against Felix Auger-Aliassime in what promises to be the match of the round — Auger-Aliassime has lost just one service game all tournament, and Djokovic is chasing history. On the women’s side, an all-American clash between Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, and Naomi Osaka against Karolina Muchova.
